WEEK 31

Market is down, so are temperatures, mercifully. I am severely sleep-deprived, having had only one hour of sleep between noon Tuesday and 4:00AM Thursday.

WHAT KIND OF FUTURE...

...can a kid expect to have when he's been kicked out of daycare? Being kicked out of school, college, the trailer park, the old folks' home?

DC SOLDIERS ON

Eight days after the devastating earthquake martial law as been lifted from Washington and surrounding areas. But life will never be the same again for the capital city and its people.

Day 190

D wonders why I actually did a Google search on "retarded hick" and "retarded hicks." Maybe the man has a point.

Friday, July 23, 2010

WEEK 30

Market ended on an up note. WX incredibly hot, no relief in sight. DC continues to recover from the 3.6 or whatever earthquake. It's incredible how the victim mentality has permeated our culture.

Got out of jury duty -- the woman at the court house swears US Marshalls will not escort me out of my home. Since I had more than four days with nothing to do I drove back to Pennsylvania. No one killed anyone.
Been watching "Lost" a lot. It seems most of the people on the island have issues with family and friends. That's what they need to overcome, not academic or professional shortcomings. Twenty years ago Barbara Bush said "At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a child, a friend or a parent
."

DAY 186

I fled the devastation that is Washington for the safety of my ancestral homeland. There I was reunited with my mother who was seeking refuge from the heat and humidity of southwest Florida. I was able to secure food and cash donations from the good people of Western Pennsylvania to help DC rebuild. As I have a birthday coming, this was not too hard.

Monday, July 19, 2010

DAY 185

One the first working day after the devastation communication has been restored to post-quake Washington, trains are running and major airports are open.

Sunday, July 18, 2010

DAY 184

Just as I was feeling sorry for myself I found Support 2010 DC Earthquake Victims:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=144657415549386

Some of the best posts: "I still can't talk about it. My therapist recommended paper and a box of crayons. I will try to express my trauma via pictures when I feel ready."

"The biggest concern I have is that once the media stops covering the event, the area and its victims will be forgotten and left to fend for themselves....."

"The children! What about the CHILDREN?!? Oh, won't someone PLEASE think about the CHILDREN?!?!?!"

LOVE LETTERS

Ironic that two of the poems which were most unforgettable to me have the word “letter” in them. I read Li Po’s The River Merchant’s Wife: A Letter in high school. It deals with love which grows yet sets limits: http://homepages.wmich.edu/~cooneys/poems/li-po-pound.html

Four years later in college I read A Letter by Anthony Hecht. While this protagonist also misses the object of his affections, he is in a different predicament and writes “I would have you know that all is not well” in the final stanza:
